Back up, export, and erase
Your travel record is saved locally on the iPhone. Backups let you retain a portable copy; restoring replaces the app's current record.
What stays on your device
The app saves travel days and evidence, trips, passport dates and labels, home country, review items, enabled rule choices, personal rule answers, exclusions, imported rule revisions, and result snapshots. It also remembers onboarding completion and the notification preference.
Trip records include a map coordinate. A photo-derived trip can retain a representative coordinate from a photo; it is not accurate to describe all coordinates as temporary. Photo pixels are not copied by the reconstruction feature. Original Photos library items are not deleted or changed by scanning or by erasing Borderly data.
There is no custom travel-data upload service in the inspected app. However, local storage does not mean the entire app is offline:
- Destination search and map display use Apple Maps.
- Converting photo coordinates into place names uses Apple's geocoder and may need network access.
- Subscription offers, purchase status, and paywall impressions use Apple/Adapty services.
- Opening a source or legal link uses an external website.
The code does not establish a guarantee that no coordinates or service metadata ever leave the device. Network traffic and third-party retention were not audited. There is no app-level encrypted vault, and Borderly's exported JSON backups are not encrypted by the app.
Save a free full backup
- Open You → Backup & restore → Create or share backup, or You → Export all data.
- Wait for the export files to be prepared on the device.
- Select Full backup (JSON).
- Use the system share sheet to save a copy to a destination you control.
The backup contains days, trips, evidence, passports, home country, enabled counters, rule answers and exclusions, saved evaluations, and imported rules. It does not include the review queue, purchase entitlement, or all preferences. It is available without a subscription.
The saved file includes sensitive travel and passport-expiry metadata in readable form. Only the specific files you choose to share leave through the share sheet; opening Export itself prepares files locally.
If preparation fails, the screen shows Could not prepare export files and the error detail. Retry after checking available storage. Canceling the share sheet leaves the app's record unchanged.
Export reports with Pro
In You → Export all data, Pro unlocks:

Select a report to open the share sheet. Files are generated from the current local record. These are CSV reports, not PDFs. The rule-evaluation CSV describes counts and explanations; it is not a separate row for every counted day ID. Full result data is included in JSON backups.
Export files are prepared when the screen opens and when the combined record count changes. If you edited values without changing the number of records, leave and reopen Export to regenerate them.
Restore a backup
Restore replaces your record
The current app applies the chosen backup without a second replacement confirmation. Save a backup of your current record before choosing another one to restore.
- Open You → Backup & restore.
- Tap Restore from a Borderly backup.
- Choose the JSON backup in the file picker.
- Wait for Backup restored, then inspect Timeline, passports, and counters.
Restore replaces days, trips, passports, rule profiles, rule history, and imported rules. It clears the review queue. Enabled counters are restored only where their IDs exist in the resulting library, and the free-plan counter limit still applies. An unreadable or incompatible file produces Could not restore this backup rather than a successful replacement.
There is no restore Undo and no merge option. Review decisions absent from the backup are not reconstructed automatically. The Optional iCloud backup is off row is informational: automatic iCloud backup and sync are not implemented.
Erase the app's record
- Make and verify a backup first if you want to retain the record.
- Open You → Erase all Borderly data.
- Read the confirmation and choose Erase, or Cancel to keep the data.
Erase clears travel days, trips, review items, passports, rule answers and exclusions, imported rules, active counters, and saved evaluations. It resets home country to the device region and returns to onboarding. There is no Undo.
Despite the broad confirmation wording, it does not reset every setting: the notification preference is retained. It does not cancel Pro, revoke iPhone permissions, delete original photos, remove backups shared elsewhere, or explicitly clean up temporary export files. Old pending rule notifications can also survive. Manage those separately when needed.
